Koroni, with its beautiful landscape, attracts the interest of visitors today. The Venetian Castle that dominates the top of a hill, the picturesque cobbled streets, the mansions and many churches give a medieval character to the city. The beautiful harbor full of fishing boats and sailboats, the beautiful light-colored houses with colorful windows and blooming flowers in the gardens, the narrow whitewashed alleys, the picturesque shops on Molos and the wonderful clean beaches really give a Greek island landscape.
It is the first thing one sees when entering the city. It was built by the Venetians in the late 13th century on the ruins of a Byzantine fortress. Its most important monuments are the Byzantine church of Agia Sophia, the church of Agios Charalambos and a large octagonal tower in the inner enclosure. Inside the castle are preserved carved tombs, Venetian cisterns.
It is one of the most famous castles in Greece, on the southeast coast of the Prefecture of Messinia. It is built on a low peninsula, hill in the homonymous town of Koroni. It was built during Byzantine times, exactly when it is unknown, occupying the key geographical position where, according to Pausanias, the city of ancient Asini once dominated.
This church, which is the patron saint of the city, is located below the Castle, has a nice view of the beach of Koroni and is surrounded by palm trees. It was built on the spot where the icon of Eleistra was found, in 1897, which is considered miraculous.
The church of Panagia Eleistria is located at the southwestern edge of the Venetian fortress of Koroni, in a position that offers the visitor magnificent views of the entrance of the Messinian Gulf, the bay of Koroni, Cape Akritas, the islet of Venetiko and Mount Taygetos.
The church was inaugurated in 1900, after the discovery of an icon of Panagia Eleistria in 1897. The discovery of the icon was made after the revelation of an elderly woman living in Koroni, who is said to have for fifteen years had a vision of the figure of the Virgin Mary indicating to her the location of three small icons: the Crucified, the Virgin Mary and Saint Luke. The icons were found inside a large rock cleft on January 21, 22 and 23, 1897, and were embossed. The composition of the three icons is today's image of Eleistria.
The temple is three-sided and celebrates three times a year: on Friday of Zoodochos Pigi, on September 14 and March 25. Below the church, on the rock where the icon of the Virgin Mary was found, there is a small chapel that has -for obvious reasons- the name "Find". The icon of Panagia Eleistria is miraculous and attracts visitors from many places, who invoke her help in curing various diseases.

Ancient Koroni in today's Petalidi was founded by Boeotian settlers, around 365 B.C. It experienced particular growth in Hellenistic and Roman times, while it had an important port. Pausanias mentions that in the city there were sanctuaries of Inos, Artemis, Asclepius and Dionysus while he mentions the important bronze statues of Zeus and Athena.
In today's Koroni, on the contrary, was Asini, known since the 5th century BC. In the 9th century, in Byzantine times, the inhabitants of Koroni settled in Asini, bearing its name. In 1207, when the Venetians expelled the Frankish garrison of Geoffrey Villehardouin, Koroni was reinforced with extensive fortifications. Together with Methoni, they then formed the so-called "Eyes of Venice" (oculi capitals communis), as they became stations of its ships, which ensured its commercial activities in the East. Then Koroni became an important commercial center, with a strong economy and great radiance.
